The Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou estate which is located in St. Julien is one of the oldest wine producing estates in the Medoc region. The name Ducru Beaucallou is tranulated meaning beautiful stones. The special soil that the grapes are grown in were literally covered with large stones. The grapes grown in this soil and turn into wine are called Bordeaux wines.

In 1720 the Berberon family was in charge of the Chateau. Bertrand Ducru purchased the estate in 1795. He added his name Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou to the winery. He hired well known Parisian architect, Paul Abadie to build a special chateauon the property. In 1855 the winery was awarded Second growth status, Classification of the Medoc. The family sold the winery in 1866 to Lucie Caroline Dassier for one million Francs.
