Henry William Putnam was from Bennington, Vermont. In 1882 he would invent a fruit jar closure that would change the way people could preserve their food. It was a glass lid which was secured by a wire bail which stayed with the jar. These Lightning jars would become very popular. It was a better way to seal the jar and even a quicker way to open the jar. Many other fruit jar companies would start producing jars with other wire bail styles. Below are photos of an assortment of Lightning jars in different sizes and colors.

These jars come in sizes ranging from ½ pint to a 4 gallon jar. The color the jars come in were clear, aqua, apple green, citron, emerald green, dark olive green, yellow, honey amber, other shades amber, teal, cobalt and corn flower blue. They also produced a reproduction of a quart size lightning jar with the base embossed Putnam 227.
